18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
Do you find it interesting that Matthew chose to mention this little detail of Jesus observing the two brothers casting their nets into the sea? After reading this text I was struck with the reality of how much attention Jesus pays to the little details of our lives; That everything we do is observed and noticed by Jesus. That is why his timing is perfect. He knows when we are at a place to hear him speak to our lives. Just like with Andrew and Peter, He sees every aspect of our lives and knows the perfect time to interrupt. I believe that he waited for the perfect time to call them. I think about how God spoke to me at the perfect time in my life. A time that was calculated for me. When I was ready, he spoke. When I was convinced that I could not continue the way I was, God was asking for my attention – because he wanted to take me to a greater place. He asked for my attention and I had to give it to him.
As disciples in Christ, have we been giving God our attention? Has he been speaking? Perhaps you hear his faint voice. You know in your spirit he has been urging, burdening, and tugging on you. Perhaps he has new direction for you at a time you have been caught up in something unhealthy or toxic. Perhaps he wants to take you past “lukewarm” Christianity and into something deeper. Has He has been trying to get your attention?
Has he been calling you to prayer, worship, church or through emotions? Sometimes you may be down because God may be disrupting you. Your joy may be leaking out because we have not been in his presence for too long of a season. Perhaps it is time to take a careful look at our life and ask the question, if God is speaking to us, are we responding? Are we paying attention? If he is, are we willing, like Simon and Andrew, to turn away from the distraction and give God our time and attention?
Challenge:
Has he caught your attention, has he been speaking to your life? Have you been too distracted to hear him?
